Grade 8 Mini-Test

Mr. Hartmann                                       Name: __________________
Progressive Era Test                             Due November 20, 2012

In class we have read muckraking literature of Upton Sinclair and we have watched muckraking documentary of Morgan Spurlock. Both of these muckrakers wrote about the Food Services industry.

DUE on WEDNESDAY  Nov 22, 2012
NO LATE ESSAYS WILL BE ACCEPTED

I want you to write a TWO paragraph paper on a topic you think should be exposed for doing damage to the public at large.

For example:
Mr. Hartmann thinks that internet usage is a problem. This is a problem because public libraries are being underused and losing funds, reading skills are being affected and lastly spelling is being changed by internet abbreviations.
He would research by comparing the grades of students who use the internet more than 2 hours a day to students who use the internet less than 2 hours a day. He would also research this by contacting the Brooklyn Public Library to ask what they think the major causes of  declining library use.

Project 1

Mr. Hartmann                                    Trimester 1 Social Studies Project
Leadership Project                        Grades 7 and Grades 8

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams

Task:
1. Choose a historical figure from the era your social studies class covers: Grade 7 1500 – 1850, Grade 8 1850 – 2000.

2. Use a variety of resources (at least two different resources) to gather information about the historical figure.

3. Compose a hamburger essay which shows how this historical figure “inspire[d] others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more.”

4. Read and re-read your essay so that there are no grammatical, spelling, usage, punctuation errors. And make sure that you have backed up the main idea with facts. You also need to tell me where you got each fact.

For example:

Roman statesman Scipio Cornelius had a “desire to lead a noble life” and he did this by having “a reputation for self-discipline” (Polybius, p 529). Scipio Cornelius inspired others to do more by expecting more of himself, instead of wasting his time on “musical entertainments” and “luxurious habits,” Scipio studied and read closely the laws which he governed of the Roman republic (Polybius, p 529).

When you get information from another source you need to cite it—or write down from where the information came. The direct quotations in the box above came from a book by Polybius on page 529. If you get the information from a webpage, write the webpage in parenthesis, if you get information from a book, write the book’s author and then list the book at the end of your essay.

This project is due Friday, October 26, 2012.
No late assignments will be accepted.

The best two essays from each grade will represent ICS at The Mary Louis Academy’s History Day on November 8, 2012 and get a 105 on project.
