Aim: What was Jefferson’s Foreign Policy?
Today I will read about Jefferson’s interactions with foreign nations
So that I can understand how the US got into another war
I’ll know I’ve got this when I can explain two causes of the War of 1812
Do Now:

If you were a merchant in Miami who traded goods with Cuba and then the government said “NO MORE TRADE WITH CUBA.” What would you do? Why?

First Barbary War (1801-1805)
Barbary States – Muslim North African Tripoli and Algeria, which were colonies of the Ottoman Empire (Turkey)
America had been paying tribute (bribes) to Mediterranean pirates to protect traders since the 1790s - $1M per year.
Jefferson hated this and after his inauguration he refused payment.
The pasha of Tripoli declared war on United States in 1801 by chopping down the US flag.

First Barbary War (1801-1805)
Jefferson dispatched a naval squadron to Mediterranean.
Although squadron failed to defeat pirates, the pasha agreed to a treaty more favorable to  United States.
The USS Philadelphia, a frigate, had been hijacked by the Tripolitans and all those aboard made slaves.
Marines later set fire to it.
Wearied of the blockade and raids, the Pasha signed a peace treaty
